It comes almost exclusively from developed countries;
The research topics are chosen by the countries that provide the funding rather than the African countries themselves;
90% of funding allocated to medical research on the continent is still devoted to infectious diseases, even though non-communicable diseases are the first cause of death in Africa.
The funding of research in Africa should reflect the epidemiological transition that has been unfolding on the continent.
African doctors should be able to choose the diseases on which they wish to work on; create and carry out the research studies and tests of their choice; analyze, publish, and benefit from the results themselves.
To share awareness on these issues, we will hold the conference The Dakar Call, sponsored by the Presidency of the Republic of Senegal, on September 25-26, 2023,
on the theme:
Disease management: status, challenges, and perspectives.
NCD research: assessment of the African situation.

This scientific meeting will bring together the global health and academic communities, funding stakeholders (development agencies, the private sector), as well as the Ministries of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the Ministries of Health, and the deans and scientists from the countries of the ARN network.
To enable the production of high-quality global health research from Africa and train the next generation of international research leaders, we created in 2018 The African Research Network .
The ARN is a growing community of cardiologists, epidemiologists, and pharmacists from 37 medical centers and 14 universities across 20 sub-Saharan African countries - and counting!
Our aim is the production of significant data to minimize the unknowns around the prevalence and etiology of NCDs in Africa.
The ARN work is regularly published in leading global health journals and includes studies on Rheumatic Heart disease, Sickle Cell disease, Epidemiological transition, Quality of cardiovascular and anti-diabetic drugs, Severe Hypertension, or Acute Rheumatic Arthritis.
